No More Bench Seats
February 17th, 2013
For those of us old enough to remember when the bench seat was more common than the bucket seat, the 2013 Chevy Impala is the last car that will offer one. For the updated 2014 model, Chevrolet is dropping this option so for the first time you will not see a bench seat in any production car.
My first three cars, a 1968 Olds Delmont 88, a 1971 Chevy Impala and a 1974 Ford Galaxie all had bench seats. Bench seats didn’t give much support, but back then you wanted to pile in as many of your friends as the law allowed.
As I got older I began to appreciate sportier cars and found that bucket seats held me in place better and made the ride much more comfortable. Still, it seems strange to think that something that has been around for over 100 years will be gone.
